WEDDING SAND

COLOURED SAND IS A POPULAR WAY TO CREATE A BEAUTIFUL MOMENTO

WHAT IS A WEDDING SAND CEREMONY?

A wedding sand ceremony (also called a unity sand ceremony); either replaces or comes after the unity candle in a wedding. It is a ceremony in which the bride and groom take turns pouring different colours of sand into a vase, often while reciting vows.

The result of the sand ceremony is a vase of sand that contains a beautiful pattern of interwoven coloured sand representing the mixing of two individuals into one entity. The grains once combined are unable to be separated, symbolizing unity and eternity.

The vase then becomes a keepsake of the wedding ceremony and with the proper care can be kept for a lifetime.

TYPES OF SAND CEREMONIES

  • A wedding sand ceremony can also include other family members, the purpose of which is to symbolize the blending of two families into a single, cohesive family unit. In this case, it is necessary to prepare more vases and a larger palette of colours.
  • A children’s variation of the sand ceremony is perfect if the couple have children together already, or have children from a previous relationship. Each child has a small vase with coloured or white sand, and they pour this into the central vase just before the couple finish pouring in their sand. This provides a layer where the couple’s and children’s sands are mixed. The children can then pour the rest of their sand on top of the couple’s sand.
  • A religious variation of the sand ceremony is possible, where the central vase is one third filled with white sand before the ceremony. This represents God and his role as a base for the couple’s happy marriage.
  • A parents’ variation of the sand ceremony is a great way to involve the couple’s parents. Each set of parents has a vase with different coloured sand. The parents take turns to pour their sand into the central vase before the couple, creating a layered effect. This symbolises their support of the couple in marriage.
